Hey everyone – Batoul here with a quick, easy and impactful opportunity for action!
As we approach the end of California’s legislative session, Senators Lena Gonzalez and Monique Limón (author of our own SB 1230) have unveiled a new bill, SB 1137, to end neighborhood oil drilling. The proposal, for which Governor Newsom has already signaled support, would put a buffer zone of about a half mile between oil and gas drilling and California homes, schools and hospitals. Approximately three million Californians — mostly from non-white and low-income communities — live within 3,200 ft of an oil or gas well. This issue has a long history: our friends over at NRDC provide a great summary.
Now, our mission, in partnership with a coalition led by VISIÓN (Voices in Solidarity Against Oil in Neighborhoods), is to make sure the legislature approves SB 1137. Here’s how you can help:
Call 916-510-0486 to be connected with the office of a key legislator. Once you are connected, say: vote YES on SB 1137 to protect our communities from the impacts of neighborhood oil drilling and end the legacy of environmental racism in California. Expanded talking points, in both English and Spanish, are here (Thanks to VISIÓN!)
It’s that simple! If you want to call each of the key legislators or identify the legislator closest to you, their information is below:
